Ultrasound in equine practice is used predominantly in two situations. The first is evaluating the reproductive tract of mares. This gives the veterinarian an overall understanding of the ovaries and uterus to determine what part of their estrus cycle the mare is currently in, helping to determine the optimum time to breed. Ultrasound can also determine if the mare is pregnant, often as early as 14 days post breeding.

The second application is to evaluate the musculoskeletal system for injuries, allowing the veterinarian to look mostly at tendons and ligaments to determine if these structures are damaged. A detailed image of soft tissue structures, which a digital ultrasound provides, assists in such diagnosis.
