Human medicine has utilized extracorporeal shockwave (ie, lithotripsy) for quite some time. Uses in humans include treating (ie, breaking into smaller pieces so they are more easily removed) stones of many types: urinary, gall bladder, and pancreatic, to name a few. The energy that is created to break up stones is also used to treat a variety of equine conditions, including tendon and ligament injuries. While the exact mechanism of action is not fully understood, many clinical trials have been performed to assess its effectiveness with generally positive outcomes.
